How to Create A Cohesive Look in Your Home

I tend to get this question a lot on Instagram: “How do you keep your space so consistent?!”, so I had to do a blog post about it! First things first, some serious planning is in order to keep a consistent design theme through your interior. These are some of my main steps I take in creating a consistent look in your space!

Start a Mood Board

First things first, get on that inspiration board and pin, pin, pin the inspiration away! Figure out what it you love and stick to it. Basically, if you have a clear idea of what you really like and keep buying those things everything will match up.

Name Your Style

Now that you know what you like, name that style! Defining the overall vibe you want will make everything stay consistent. It can be modern, eclectic, mid-century modern, rustic, shabby chic, coastal or whatever you’re into. Just choose the word that describes you and the space you want to create so that you can keep a cohesive look as you create the space. This will also help you shopping for items, search terms are key!

Select a Color Palette

A clear color palette is vital. First, pick your favorite interior color for the space, and then build from there. Select a few neutrals that go well with that color and start off with each piece in those hues. I usually don’t do any more than two main colors in a space, and then add some neutrals. But I do really vary my shades of each color.  In my bedroom I did a peachy pink and hints of blue, with white and birch elements as my neutrals. But I do have multiple shades of pink/peach in the space so even though they’re different they’re from the same color family. Start of small, but feel free to pepper some other colors in if it feels right to you!

Buy Similar Styles Of Furniture

Unless you want a super eclectic space, buy furniture that’s all in the same style. I, for example, love mid-century modern and Scandinavian style furniture. Since I buy the same type of furniture everything has a similar style of legs, shade of wood, and overall style. All of the core furniture in my space has a similar vibe, so it all flows together. But if I threw in a shabby chic table is would throw off my whole modern look, see what I mean?

Stick to the Plan

In the end, stick to the plan. You can definitely play around and have fun, but if you start to deviate then your space will start to look inconsistent. If you’re buying random things you like at the store without thinking about how it will fit with everything else you have, you’re probably going to have an inconsistent look. Make sure the overall mood, color palette and style are related, but do what you love!

Hope this helps on your next decorating project! xoxo Erika
