Black Is King
Did you watch Beyonce’s new musical Black is King on Disney+? I watched it more times than I can count already, and I’m obsessing over every detail. It’s some of the most beautiful art I’ve seen, shines a spotlight on Black culture, and is a must-watch. If you’re not familiar with the film yet it’s a journey through the African diaspora told through music and visuals, and a unique take on the story of The Lion King. Black culture is on full display, and wow is it beautiful. I had so share some of my favorites from it here because it’s SO inspiring in so many ways–visually, culturally, the choreography, the costumes, the music, the story. Honestly it gives me chills and brings me to tears watching it every time. This is such a significant piece of art that I can’t stop gushing over it. This is one for the history books.
Jaw dropped! Is that staircase-length braids? Yes, yes it is.
It celebrates Black beauty and heritage throughout the entire film, and the hair is powerful! Floor-length braids, Bantu knots, braid crowns. Her hairstylist Neal Farinah has great posts on Instagram to educate on all of the styles.
Three generations of queens!
