Tips for Decorating With Color
Do you ever find yourself afraid of color, but wanting to venture out? These tips are for you! Neutrals might be “safe” but venturing out can really make your space pop. Trust me, color doesn’t have to be intimidating! You just want to go into it with a plan.
Find Your Colors
Take note of what colors you’re seeing together in what you save, pin or screenshot frequently! Find your favorites by seeing what you’re drawn to frequently. Then choose a color palette of one to two colors that you like together. A few of my go-to color palettes? 1) blush pink + green, 2) mustard yellow + rust, and 3) blush pink + peach.
Stick with a Limited Color Palette
For each space be sure to stick to a limited color palette. We don’t want our house looking like a crayola box exploded in it, right? Go with 2-3 colors maximum. Keep in mind that you can expand each color by including different shades of that hue.
Start Off Simply
Before you jump into a colorful piece of furniture make the core of your space neutral with your favorite neutrals like gray or white, then layer colors onto it. Start with simple accent pieces to add a pop of color. Go with easily changeable details so that you can change your mind with your moods and seasons. Throw pillows, blankets, and wall art are your best friends and will help keep things commitment free!
Let the Color Breath With Neutrals
Your brain needs negative space to breath. Every time you add a colorful peace it’s going to compete with all of the other colors in the room. A good rule of thumb: for each colorful piece, add a few neutral pieces. I like to follow the 1 to 3 rule. For each colorful pillow I add I’ll add three neutral pieces to make that colorful pillow stand out. Give the colors the spotlight they deserve, ya know? Ideas for neutral pieces: a jute rug, an ivory pillow, or a muted basket.
Add A Statement
Once you’re more comfortable with colors it’s a great idea to make a statement. Build from a statement piece, and expand the color palette by selecting colors from that piece. A good way to make a cohesive look is to choose a statement piece like a piece of art, or rug and work those colors into your space.
Pop in Your Colors and Repeat
Repeat the same colors throughout the space in a subtle, unique way. Think layers! Bring in the same color across a piece of wall art, a throw pillow, accent books, and a plant pot. This is key to accomplishing that calming feeling in a space. Your eyes won’t pick up on the fact that everything matches because it feels so naturally fitting.
