Sparrows Lodge: A Historic Hotel Tucked Away in Palm Springs

Palm Springs has always known how to keep secret hidden gems, and if you wander far enough down East Palm Canyon Drive, past the mid-century houses that flaunt their glamour in geometric defiance, you’ll find Sparrows Lodge tucked behind bougainvillea bushes.

The hotel was built in 1952, but back then, it was Castle’s Red Barn, a name that told you exactly what it was—simple, unpretentious, utilitarian. It belonged to Don Castle, a man who’s face flickered across MGM Hollywood movies in the 1940s. When he wasn’t in the movies, he came here to this barn in the desert.

After his time it opened as a hotel, but the barn wasn’t for everyone. You needed a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card just to step inside. Stars like Lucille Ball and Clark Gable swirled their drinks here, far from the prying eyes of Hollywood gossip columns.

In 2013, it was renamed Sparrows Lodge. The barn was rebuilt in a way that felt deliberate, as though its weathered beams and stone floors had always known they were destined to hold stories. The new owners leaned into its simplicity. There is no television here. There are no phones. You can hear your thoughts in a place like this, and maybe that’s the point. There is a kind of hush in the desert air, a deliberate quiet that only comes from a place designed to be still.

They left the bones of Don Castle’s dream intact: the barn doors still open wide, the pool still catches the desert light, and the whispers of Hollywood linger in the air if you know how to listen. But now it’s a place for everyone. That’s the magic of this place. It holds the past without clinging to it.

When we were in Kyoto we had to stop by Le Labo’s newest store–a traditional Machiya fully restored to perfection. In Kyoto’s Shimokorikicho, Nakagyo-ku neighbourhood the traditional Japanese Townhouse blends wabi-sabi with the art of slow perfumery. The building, which dates back to 1879 and was once a sake brewery, is an ode to Japanese heritage and craftsmanship.

The are so many stunning elements like Japanese reclaimed wood, traditional notebooks, flowing noren curtains, and stunningly worn walls. Head to the back of the machiya to the onsite café tucked in the house’s original garden and order a matcha. You can sit and sip it in the dreamy, peaceful zen garden. It’s a peaceful retreat with a fountain, statues, and native plants.

I’ve been in the mood to refresh all of my art around the apartment lately, but art can be so expensive! So I have a budget-friendly option that I’m loving — digital download art. It’s the perfect way to swap out your art regularly, and have a vintage look without the cost. You can find so many digital downloads on Etsy, from modern art options to vintage oil paintings. There are so many gorgeous options for every style! I rounded up a few of my favorites below, and included links to the ones that I ordered and framed in my bedroom. Happy styling!

For my bedroom I opted for a more pink option (since I’ve been doing lots of pinks and greens in the space lately) with this pink portrait of a woman, and then layered that with this cool black and white palm tree sketch. I love the combination of the two and how the neutral black and white really makes the pink pop. It was so easy to order these and frame them in some frames I already had at home. My total cost to print the two pieces of art was under $50 and it totally transformed the space!

Where Should I Print the Art?

If you have a printer at home, you can easily print your digital downloads that way. However, for the best results, I recommend having your art printed professionally to ensure top quality and longevity. For budget-friendly printing options, consider popular stores like Michaels, Staples, or CVS. If you’re looking for higher quality printing, you might want to check out specialized services such as Artifact Uprising, Samy’s Prints, Persnickety Prints, Mpix Photo Lab, or Framebridge.

The type of paper you choose also plays a crucial role in the final outcome. For home printing, opt for cardstock or matte/satin-finish photo paper. At office-supply stores, matte cardstock and photo paper with a matte or satin finish work well. Photo companies can provide options like matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss-finish photo paper, while fine-art printing companies can elevate your prints with heavyweight matte, giclee paper, or even rolled canvas for a sophisticated touch.

Faux Lime Wash DIY

I’d been wanting to do a lime wash wall in my dining space, but I was having price fears when I would add the lime wash paint to my cart. I decided to go for a faux tutorial to get a similar look on a budget. While technically not lime wash paint, this quick and easy tutorial gets a similar look to lime wash on a fraction of the cost of traditional lime wash paint. Here’s a quick and easy DIY on how to make a faux lime wash wall!

Here’s how I did it:

• Step 1: get two similar paint colors in different shades (I used Behr’s “Roman Plaster” and “Swiss Coffee”)
• Step 2: pour the paint into two seperate paint trays and dip each side of a wide paint brush into one of the colors 
• Step 4: brush the paint on in a crisscross shape making X’s along the wall
• Step 5: do a second coat and repeat the process on any patchy areas

I’m having a peach and olive moment in my bedroom right now, and thought I’d share my linen bedding details. I’m a little obsessed with linen bedding, and I’ve had quite a few different linen bedding sets and colors from neutral to bold and colorful. Right now I have this linen olive green toned duvet from Quince in the color ‘Willowleaf‘. I’m obsessed with this color! I’ve been switching up the colors, and I just swapped out the sheets for one of my favorites — this peachy pink tone ‘Hazelnut’ from Bed Threads. I love this little color combo.
