Essential Travel Tips

As much as I’d love to say “half of the fun is getting there”, let’s just be real travel is a pain in the ass. People think traveling often is glamorous, but there is nothing glam about getting through the airport. With that said, I’m here to give you a few tips to make it a little less of the hell it can be. Here are a few tips to make it through the airports, and still be excited about your vacation.

  • Invest in a good neck pillow + eye mask: There is no room for landing to your destination tired. Be sure to pack a good neck pillow, and eye mask so that you can ensure you’re as best rested as possible on a plane. While you’re at it throw in a sleeping pill on a long flight. Sleep and comfort is essential. even if you only have like 2 feet of space.
  • Pack a portable charger: There is nothing worse than being in a new place trying to map your way around and having 5% battery. Be sure to pack a portable charger (or two!) and keep it in your bag everywhere you go. I have this one, and it’s a life saver.
  • Bring a travel pouch. I’ve learned there’s nothing worse than digging through your bag to find something when you’re in a tiny ass airplane seat. Put all of your essentials into a little pouch to that you can grab them in 2 seconds. I’m talking face wipes, Advil, a pen for customs forms, your Passport, chapstick, and travel-size beauty essentials.
  • Two words: rolling luggage. If you’re still lugging around those clunky old two-wheeled suitcases from the 90s, you’ve got to trash those. Invest in luggage that has 4 wheels that go in every direction. These bags seriously save my life while traveling and I couldn’t have made it through the many metro stops and cobblestone streets without them.
  • Always take your essentials with you. Just in case your luggage gets lost, make sure you have an extra pair of what you absolutely have to have in your carry on.
  • Bring a moisturizer. Airplanes are the driest place for your skin. So pack a travel-size skin cream and refresh your skin mid-trip.
  • Map out your essentials before you go. I always make a Google Doc for each trip with the itinerary, and at the top I put the address to where I’m staying, and how to get there (like the Metro directions). I have the app on my phone, and then make it “available offline” so that even if I don’t have service when I land I know exactly where I’m going and how to get there. Also handy for when you have to fill our your customs traveling forms in the airport!
  • Don’t forget a portable water bottle. I have to have water on a plane, and I’m not about to spend $5 on water in every terminal. Pretty much every airport has a water fill-up station, plus it’s an eco-friendly solution for your entire trip.
