How to do Grocery Store Flowers Like A Pro

If you haven’t noticed on my Instagram I pretty much have an addiction to picking up some blooms every time I make a grocery store run. Grocery store flowers tend to have a “cheap” association with them, and I’m here to break that cliche. There are definitely occasions where a florist is necessary, but buying weekly arrangements from a florist is def not in my budget. There are so many gorgeous bouquets you can make from a few grocery store flowers. Let me explain…

Flower Arrangement Tips

To make a pretty grocery store bouquet here are all of my tips!

1. Choose your color palette. I usually like to choose 2-3 colors to start from that go well together. Be sure to use some brightly colored flowers with some neutrals for balance. Avoid a bunch of super dark or bold colors. Think colors that complement eachother.

2. Mix up the shapes. Some tall thin flowers with some plump round flowers will give your bouquet an eyecatching mix.

3. Don’t forget some green. Once you’ve got your colorful blooms picked out be sure to add some green fillers into the mix to make it look full and well-rounded. I love fern, eucalyptus leaves, and sage. They sell these individualy at Trader Joe’s for around $2.99.

4. Trim those babies. Be sure to snip the bottom of each stem so that it can soak up the fresh water too. Then, cut off any excess leaves hanging from the stem that will go into the water as those tend to create bacteria make the flowers droop and die much more quickly.

5. Stagger your flowers. Ever picked up flowers and plopped them into a vase then wonder why you’re not into them? It’s essential to cut and arrange them into a bouquet. Cutting the stems at different heights and staggering the different varieties will make the arrangement pop. A general rule of thumb is to set greenery/filler higher, then stagger the flowers and colors for balance. Be creative and play around with different looks!

6. Swap out the water. Want to make your blooms last? Switch out the water every few days to make them last longer. If you have the flower food packets be sure to mix those in too!

My Favorite Flowers

Now for the flowers! Sharing all of the flowers you can’t go wrong with below.

Tulips

Love me some tulips! I fell in love with tulips when I went to Amsterdam and saw the dreamy tulip fields there. I can’t resist picking up a bunch each time I see them. It’s such a quick and easy bouquet you can just put them in a vase solo and call it a day. But they also look amazing staggered with some other varieties. My favorites are white, yellow and light pink.

Peonies

Ahh my favorite flower ever! Pop a bouquet of these flowers into a vase and it’s immediate perfection. I usually just trim the tips, and chop of a few of the lower leaves and voila. I buy peonies literally every time I see them because they are only in season for a quick amount of time. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are my go-to grocery spots for these gems. Pro tip: You can get these between May-June at Trader Joe’s for $7.99!

Ranunculus

I can’t get enough of these beauties. They pretty much always look amazing, and every color is a dream.
