Mexico City Travel Guide

Last month I went to Mexico City and fell in love with this colorful place! I had no idea what a hidden gem it is, and that it’s easily one of the most affordable international trips you can take from the states. Plus, the flight from LA is as quick as a flight to Chicago. Low-cost and quick? Win, win.

DAY 1

We stayed at an Airbnb in the Roma Norte neighborhood and LOVED it. It’s central to a ton of great restaurants and shops, I’d 100%  recommend you stay there when visiting! We got in at sunset, walked around the neighborhood and grabbed dinner at Fonda Fina. All of the food and cocktails were top-notch.

DAY 2

Frida Kahlo has always been one of my favorite artists, so I was excited to be in the city she lived in. We made a trip to her blue house and it was so peaceful. We sat in the courtyard in the center of the house and talked for a bit surrounded by cobalt blue walls and felt like we were in a jungle. It’s hard to believe this place is in the middle of the city!Mexico City Travel Guide | www.erikacarlock.com

Right after we left Frida Kahlo’s house, we went to her husband’s studio (Museo Estudio Diego Rivera) and became obsessed with this cactus fence around the place. SO cool!

For dinner we headed back to Roma Norte and got pizza and drinks at the Gin Gin Room. All of the cocktails on their menu are made with gin, we loved all of the drinks.

DAY 3

We started the morning off with churros at Churrería El Moro . Love this tile! We got the churros and chocolate and they were delicious. There are a few locations across the city so you can always get your churro fix.

My favorite things about Mexico City were the beautiful colors everything and the vintage bugs you spot at every turn! We took Uber’s everywhere we went, and they were really affordable and we were told more reliable than taxis (check out  the PINK taxis down here…).

We grabbed mezcal margaritas and appetizers at Contramar (love that ceiling!) and then wandered around the Roma Norte neighborhood and checked out this amazing bookstore and cafe Cafebrería El Péndulo Roma. Look at all of those books!

On the way to dinner at Pujol we stopped by the Museo Soumaya. The architecture alone is amazing, but inside they have some  Salvador Dalí art I was excited to see. Mexico City Travel Guide | www.erikacarlock.com

DAY 4

One of the main reasons I wanted to go to Mexico City was to finally see Luis Barragán’s architecture in person. It did not disappoint! We went to La Casa Luis Barragán and Casa Gilardi, they were both a dream. Be sure to book them in advance as they tend to sell out.

I loved how Barragán painted with light.  Every single details was designed intentionally, even down to the way a lamp would reflect the light along the wall. Everything looked so amazing… talk about a color lovers dream.
